Orzchis

CD PACKAGING, ILLUSTRATION, HAND-LETTERING

Hildegard von Bingen was a 12th century nun, mystic, composer, and writer. The illuminated manuscript, Scivias, was created to document the visions seen by Hildegard, which she believed came from God. Hildegard was most likely very involved with the creation of the illustrations in Scivias, which is noteworthy as some of the most unique imagery to come out of this era in art history.

I created packaging for an album titled "Orzchis", meaning "Immeasurable", a word that comes from Hildegard's constructed language and alphabet, the Lingua Ignota. I re-interpreted the imagery from Scivias in a contemporary way, and created lettering based on her aforementioned constructed alphabet.
